Obituary of Cathy Mulrine

After an unexpectedly quick end to a long illness, we said goodbye to our mum, granny and your friend, Cathy Mulrine on August 6.

A proud Scot, she was born in Glasgow in 1953 to a large family that she loved with all of her heart. She came to Canada in 1966 and it became her home. She met our dad when they were both teenagers, but it wasn’t quite love at first sight, at least not for mum. That would come later, as would 3 daughters and 7 grandchildren.

Despite her small size, there was nothing little about her (except, perhaps, her patience). A force of nature is the most common description we’ve seen these past few days. She was driven, passionate, loving, and most of all, kind. Everyone was welcome at her table, and she was happiest when feeding people and taking care of them.

In addition to building a strong and loving family, she also built an incredible career. She was a doer, an organizer, and she recognized the best in people and made them better. She was devoted to her career, and in doing so, showed her daughters that they could achieve anything.

As a family, we share our grief with the many people she impacted over her life. We have received messages from around the world remembering what a phenomenal woman she was.

She leaves behind her daughters, Michelle (Sean), Colleen (Gerry), and Laura (Andrew), her grandchildren, Frances, Maria, Rory, Niamh, Eilidh, Conall, and Paul, as well as her wee brother, John, her niece, Gina, her sister-in-law Liz, and many friends. She also leaves behind a remarkable legacy and an example of how to live a good life.

We send thanks to her many doctors, especially her GP, Dr. Bichay, and Dr. Coppens and the ICU nurses at Lakeridge Health who made her last days peaceful.

We know she has been reunited with her Mammy and Daddy and siblings. And it gives us comfort knowing she’ll be with the love of her life, Tommy, who she missed so much these past 14 years.

A Memorial Mass at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 127 Liberty St S, Bowmanville, will take place on Tuesday August 13, 2024, at 11AM.

In lieu of flowers, we ask for donations to St. Paul on the Hill food bank, a charity that Mum was fond of, and carries on her mission of feeding people.

Arrangements entrusted to NORTHCUTT ELLIOTT FUNERAL HOME.
