I knew David from Kew Beach Bible Class starting in 1960. We dated for about three years; from his last two years at U of T until his first year at Danforth Collegiate. I was eighteen and he told me that he was twenty-five (spring 1960). I was surprised to find out from his obituary that he was really two years older.
He was a gentleman and a very thoughtful person. Once when my dad's car was in the shop for a week being repaired, David insisted that he was to have the use of his car as my dad needed a car for business..
I typed all of David's assignments as I was a secretary, primarily at the Toronto Star. David, as you know, lived near The Kingston Road and Woodbine. I lived in North Toronto. Every weekend he would arrive in his Volkswagon. In the summer we had many picnics at Lake Simcoe as well as visiting his cousins and uncle in Barrie.
There were many parties at my house hosted by my brother Willard and me. Perhaps I was too young (and not a university graduate) in the final analysis as we broke up when I was twenty-one and he was , surprise, thirty. In all the nearly three years I only met his mother once, and that was at David;s graduation. David always said that she didn't approve of any of his brother's girlfriends and apparently she always referred to me as 'that girl'..
The award winning editorial cartoonist Duncan MacPherson at The Toronto Star became a friend of mine and he did charicatures of two of my boyfriends. (Duncan didn't meet them but drew from my descriptions.) I hope that David kept his. It shows a rather naive looking young man carrying a globe of the world walking down a school corridor. Leaning against a wall, and looking at David was a student who looked more like a gorilla, wearing a shirt with the word "Damforth' emblazoned on it and swinging a key chain. The caption to the drawing was, "Hi teach".
David was well-liked by all who knew him, I was very pleased to know that he had a very full life and continued to contribute to society. When he was with The Junior Board of Trade we would visit WW! veterans in the military residence at Sunnybrook Hospital to play cards and chat.
Many happy memories. David, always loved hockey from his days in Junior B, so it was always Hockey Night in Canada during the winter on Saturdays, so Friday night was movie night. When I knew him it was golf in the summer and, of course, teaching swimming at a community centre in The Beaches and then selling large appliances at The Exhibition.
How have I spent the last sixty-one years? I married a geologist in Toronto and lived in the Summerhill neighbourhood for over fifty years. My life has been community volunteerism, along with bringing up three children, two boys and one girl. We have three grandchildren , two boys and a girl whom we see almost weekly. Among my volunteer work, I was a narrator for Talking Books for over ten years at the CNIB and a docent at The Royal Ontario Museum for over forty. My husband and I have been happily married for nearly sixty years. He is now ninety-four and in very good health. I suppose I always attracted older boyfriends.
It was always a given that David would make a wonderful father as he had a great fondness and respect for children. Once, I recall, when out with him in a shopping centre, being approached by two teenage boys. Their expressions were of delight as they recognized a very special teacher from their public school days.
All my memories are fond ones. You are missing him, but, according to his obituary he lived a very full life amid a lot of love. He deserved it.

Rob,
Your Dad certainly lived a full life. Memories and stories will stay in the hearts and minds of all your family forever.
I am also so sorry to hear about your Mum's fall. I do hope that she recovers well and can make it to Pine Point - there is nothing like the restorative air, water and nature of the Bay.
Very best to you and your family,
David

Dear Penny Anne and Family:
We were so sorry to learn of David's passing. Henry remembers having fun with David on the Hampton Bowling Team when the Rural Bowling League was still active - just one of the many community groups David participated in. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. May your cherished memories live on in your hearts and minds forever and may he rest in peace after a life well-lived. With our most sincere condolences, Barbara and Henry Pokorski
