Obituary of Evelyn May Winters

Born May 20, 1928, Brookfield Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland

Died December 6, 2021, Bowmanville, Ontario

Evelyn May Winters (Blackwood) of Bowmanville passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Monday, December 6th at the age of 93.

Her great grandparents came to Newfoundland from Scotland. Her parents, Maggie and Capt. Peter Blackwood, resided in Brookfield, Bonavista Bay where she spent her childhood years. Evelyn wed her beloved Spencer in 1951. They raised 4 children, living in Atlantic Canada, Ontario and then Calgary. Evelyn moved to Bowmanville after Spencer’s passing.

She attended Prince of Wales College and completed a commercial business course and played piano and organ. She was strong of faith and was a lifelong contributor to the United Church of Canada. She participated in choirs and organizations and was a charter member of the new Wasaga Beach United Church.

Evelyn’s life was the epitome of family love and joy. She was a fantastic cook and baker, and her pots of soup with homemade rolls welcomed everyone!!  As a mother, grandmother (Nan(s)) and great-grandmother, she filled her days with creating memories, fun and keepsakes for all.

Three life lessons she shared were:

  • “Never leave home without your lipstick on, ladies! “
  • “Ice cream is the best treat!”
  • “As long as you can laugh, life is worth living! “

Evelyn was predeceased by her parents, Capt. Peter and Maggie Blackwood, and siblings Julia Andrews, George Blackwood, Irene Gibbons, Marie Mullett and Stella Howell. She is survived by siblings Pearl Kean, Cyril Blackwood and Majorie Kells, as well as a large family of nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her children,

  • Sandra Winters (John Vendel), son Joseph-Winters Cachia (Natalie Meyer)
  • Peter Winters (Christine), daughters Laura (Colin Hipditch) and Mary
  • Brenda Boland (Craig) and their daughters Cassandra (Marc Miller), Breanna Mason (Nathan) and their children Ridge, Wren and Rane
  • Karen Gregory (Hank) and their children Mikayla (Jarah Lailey), Brennan (Chelsey Mastroianni) and Eric (Brehanna Gassmann)

Thank you to the staff at Seasons Clarington Retirement Home (Evelyn’s extended family) for their loving care and support. Thank you also to Dr’s Osborne, Burke and the palliative care nurses, especially Rae and Erin, for their outstanding treatment and compassion. Thanks are also extended to Rev.
