Our Grandpa will be very missed by us, but also by many who knew him. He was always so excited to greet us when we stopped in and always took the time to visit. His genuine enthusiasm made us feel more than welcome and his interest in our lives was certainly noticed and appreciated. He always pulled out an atlas to check where exactly we were and was sure to get our new phone number (even if abroad) just in case.
Grandpa made us our first wooden tool boxes at a very young age and later in life cutting boards and handcrafted jewellery boxes which we will have forever. He was the handiest person we knew and his wood working and fixit skills will always be inspiring!
He really cared about us and showed it in cute ways like trimming his hedges in the shape of a poodle (after our family dogs) and painting our parent’s exhibition for One of a Kind meticulously. Their 2019 Hall of Fame induction was in part thanks to him - he helped them onsite until well into his 80s.
He used to cover his car seats with towels but it felt like an adventure all packing into his car to go out to dinner at Swiss Chalet or East Side Mario’s. We always got the middle seats. Going to see the Christmas lights will always stand out as a neat car trip.
Whether it was building doll beds, Christmas trees or delivering Meals on Wheels, Grandpa was a true community man. We were always stunned at how connected he was with neighbours and one can only hope to have a neighbour as caring and helpful as him.
He was a lover of sweets and treats - we used to save our Halloween candy for him! We were fortunate to share many Halloweens with him growing up in Waterloo.
We were incredibly lucky to have our Grandpa for so many years. We owe him a lot and are so grateful for his generosity and love. We will miss his warm welcomes and hugs (and the house he built on Prospect).
Grandpa once told us he wished he: (1) rode a motorcycle; (2) went on a rollercoaster; (3) flew a plane. Although perhaps ambitious, hopefully we can achieve some of these on his behalf!
As we remember our Grandpa, we invite you to listen to some of his favourite music:
I’ll see you in my dreams
This was my love
Save the last dance for me
Lara’s Theme, Somewhere my love
Good night sweet heart
When day is done
We love you Grandpa! And we’ll see you in our dreams.
Love, Abbey & Emma Sturrock

Howard was a wonderful neighbour. If you ever needed anything like a tool or just some friendly advise, Howard was your man. We always enjoyed spending time with him and Helen at various neighbourhood events. When he and Helen arrived at our annual Christmas Party, he often came with a beautiful wooden box that he had made and it always contained Werthers.
He was a very special guy!
Our deepest sympathy to Helen, Dan, Jane John, Deb and all the family.
Love, Margaret & Bob Everingham

Fondly remembering Howard & Helen piloting a houseboat, years ago, through part of the Trent waterway with the Rowes & Watsons…good times with good friends! A life well lived, Howard! Our condolences to the Sturrock family.

Remembering fondly the kind and generous talents Howard shared with neighbours, friends and the community - his innate talent for woodworking and repairing - he always knew what would work! I really got to know him when he volunteered with Community Care Durham driving clients to appointments, always in the most reliable and helpful way. Always a smile with a twinkle in his eye!
May fond and cherished memories comfort you in the days ahead. Sincerely, Sally and Tom Barrie

Dan and family
Very sorry to hear of your Dad’s passing. He had a great life and was such a fun loving guy, a family friend to my parent’s Morley and Freda Watson. Lots of fun and laughter with both your Mom and Dad, Howard will be sadly missed, but always in our hearts. We bid a fond farewell to a great man, Howard, heaven received a special angel, and I know your handyman skills will be put to good use. Goodbye Howard, R.I.P.

Sincere sympathy in Howard’s passing. Remember over the years him delivering fuel to our farm on Concession 7. Always had a smile and a kind word.

Howard was indeed a great neighbour .. whether it was lending a tool or making that precision cut in a piece of hardwood flooring for you .. he was the guy to turn to. Touring on the “How n Hell” or “fishing” at Ken and Betty’s cottage are fond memories of hanging out with Mick. The neighbourhood will miss him.
