Only just heard of Janet's death. (October 2024)She was very much respected in life. In addition to everything else she worked as an organist at Douglas Hospital coordinating Sunday worship and volunteering as a musician with the Alzheimer patients for many years. She was part of supervisory groups with students and a great support to me personally. She was a wonderful listener with her own contributions to make. In her unique perspective as organist she saw a stained glass window reflected in her glass music stand. It is a picture of an angel with her head in her hand. Janet had compassion for that angel. Thanks to her and shared grief with all the rest of you. John Matheson

I first met Janet when she became interim director of Montreal City Mission (MCM) in the early 90s. She was with us only for a short while but I recall clearly what a champion she was for the communities we served and also for the staff - always working to ensure we had the best employment conditions possible. Janet retired to Ontario but remained in touch with MCM throughout the years, returning to Montreal to help us celebrate our centennial in 2010. Janet was a generous soul in every meaning of the word - with her time, resources, kindness and good will. Rest in peace dear sister.

I am a former colleague of Janet when she worked at Saint Columba House, a United Church mission, in Point St, Charles in Montreal from 1966 to 1978. I was a student at the United Theological College and worked with her for 3 years while studying (Part-time in the winter and full-time in the summer.) Janet was the most gracious and insightful person I have ever met. When she came to Saint Columba House she transformed the mission from one focused on charity to one focused on justice and empowerment. Under her leadership the medical clinic, the legal clinic, and the housing coop were developed, which still work at community issues today. Janet left a significant legacy at Saint Columba House, which this year celebrates its 100th Anniversary. Ever since her tenure, the focus on justice and empowerment has not changed, a tribute to her insight and commitment to the mission of the church. Janet will be missed at the various causes which she espoused.
My sincere condolences to all the family and friends who will miss her.
