Thank you , Brian, for your cheerful and warm presence among the staff and students at BHS. You always had time to talk and listen and provided timely support where necessary . And you didn’t mind when a soccer playing colleague won the annual hockey pool twice!! Sincere condolences to all the family.

So sorry to hear of Brian’s passing. He was so good to the staff and students at Kirby PS, by opening the doors to the Kirby Church and allowing the students to explore the books and giving them each a gift of a free book. Staff too. His family and community will miss him so much. Thinking of you all.

Mr. Colville, as I knew him best, was a great teacher. I loved his classes and always looked forward to finding his name an my timetable during my time at BHS. Ever ready with a smile, he was one of those teachers who always made me feel welcomed and appreciated. The thing I think I treasure most about him, though, is the friendship he shared with my dad. He was one of those friends that we always knew could be counted upon, not only before my dad's passing, but after as well. One of my last and fondest memories of him is the image I have of him stopping by the side of the road to help my dad who had managed to get himself and his lawn mower stuck in the ditch at the edge of our property. Brian and Ruthe had just happened to be passing by and were the first ones to stop to help. What a blessing he was to our family; whenever I think of him, I can't help but smile. Our sincerest condolences to your family at this difficult time from my mom and me.
Kathy and Nancy Le Gresley (Nancy is the wife of Farncomb Le Gresley, a colleague from Brian's years at BHS; Kathy is Farncomb and Nancy's daughter.)

I was sad to hear of the passing of Brian. I first met Brian when I was a student at BHS. Our paths would cross in the community at school events or at the Kirby Church Book Store. I go to the Book Store 2 or 3 times a year and I will miss our chats. He always asked about my family and how things were at my school. He was genuinely interested in people and our community.
At a Grade 8 Graduation for his granddaughter and my daughter, his granddaughter won the Science award and my daughter won the Athletic Award. My father taught Physical Education at Courtice SS and Brian taught Science at BHS. When we commented on this Brian smiled at me and said. "Looks like the Board got those hires right!"
He will be greatly missed.
With Sympathy,
Karl Wunderlich

Bruce and I are saddened to hear of Brian's passing. We always enjoyed seeing Brian at the arena or just around town. My father in law would brag how he taught Brian in high school. Brian loved his family and told me what each of his grandchildren were currently involved in. Sending our thoughts and prayers to Ruthe and family. RIP Brian❤️

As a parent, Brian took the support of his children to another level. While the rest of us were still sleeping on a work-day morning, Brian was up and driving his children to Barrie for figure skating practice. Katie and Adam were delivered back to school and Brian made it to his Guidance Office at BHS, ready for a full day as head of Guidance. Not many of us would take on such a commitment. I remember him always smiling in his thoughtful way as he assessed a situation from a counsellor’s perspective. While he has been retired for a few years now, those of us who worked with him at KPR will remember him with respect and sadness at his passing. To his family, I am sending condolences and this small memory as a sign of the highest regard I had for him.

Our neighbourhood and community has lost a fine man. Brian has left his legacy as a person of integrity and sincerity. In his quiet and reserved manner he was a true leader. His generosity in sharing his time and skills with the wider community will be felt long into the future. He was a wonderful role model for his family, students, neighbours and friends. Brian will be missed, but he has left this world a better place for his life's actions. We extend our best wishes to Brian's family, many of whom are our neighbours and friends as they seek to find peace in this time of great loss.

Attended BHS with Brian and met again in Kingston at a student rooming house. Brian always struck me as a gentle, intelligent person. The obvious affection and respect on the part of people who knew him later in life, whether family or community, are testaments to his character. I am happy that my father was instrumental in bringing Brian back to his hometown; Bowmanville and Orono are greatly blessed by his presence, which lives on.

I am so sorry to hear of Brian’s passing and my thoughts are with his family and friends. I’m not even from the area and live two hours away but I stopped at the bookstore twice while driving through that way. Once in August and once only a few weeks ago. Brian was my cashier both times and was a pleasure to speak with. Back in August he was really excited about an antique book he had just found that morning and wanted to show me it when I was paying for my books. I didn’t even know his name or really know him, but I remembered how passionate he seemed about books.
I followed the bookstore Instagram and saw their post just now about Brian and was very sad to read. I know this isn’t much of a memory compared to what others have wrote, but I certainly remembered him as soon as I saw the news and he made an impression on me in only my two visits to the shop. I’m so sorry to his family and friends.

I am so very sorry for your loss, Brian was a wonderful man. Brian was volunteering at the bingo at the Orono United Church when I first met him. I remember him paying me when I won my first bingo, he had such a big smile on his face. My next encounter was at the Kirby Church Book Store. He was so knowledgeable about the books and I loved to read his synopses in the paper. I took his advice a number of times. My last encounter with Brian was at the Craft and Bake Sale at the Kirby Church, he was so proud of his grandkids and introduced them to me when I was checking out. My most sincere condolences to all Brian’s family, he will be missed by so many. RIP Brian.

Simon and I are so sad to hear that the world has lost such a kind soul. Brian was a mentor to us when we first began teaching. He was part of that great group of folks who carried the torch and stood up for what was right for kids. We learned to not take ourselves or the system too seriously, staunch advice in our formative years. He was a wonderful man with a welcome smile and a subtle sense of humour. He loved his family and beamed whenever we would run into him and ask about his grandchildren. Condolences to his family.

To Mark, Melissa, Ruth and your entire Family - a sad time. Our hearts go out to you. Just this past summer
While donating books Brian gave me the tour of the main floor of the Church - I hadn’t been in for a long time. He radiated with pride in what the KCB has accomplished and that smile as he updated me on your Family (especially the Grandchildren) was immeasurable.- he was beaming. Brian always took the time to be kind and oh so pleasant when communicating with others. He will be missed.

I had the pleasure of knowing Mr. Colville, more because of hockey than a teacher. He knew my father played and I followed in his footsteps. As a goalie, he always asked about my games and I'll never forget his face after a fighting suspension...."Yeah, just like your dad!" Shaking his head and laughing. Always there with a joke, advice or a shoulder, the educational system lost a great teacher, but the world lost an even better person. My sincerest condolences to all.
