I just read the news of Al’s passing in the Oshawa Worker. My husband worked with Al in the machine shop at GM until his retirement in 2009. We continued to keep in touch with him dropping by to pick up stamps I had saved for him and he would drop off his amazing pickles. Such a great guy. He spoke of his family often. He will be missed by me and my husband. So sorry for your loss

I have many wonderful memories of time spent with the Kornic family during my high school years. Both Mr. and Mrs. Kornic always welcomed me into their home and made me feel a part of the family, and I remember a lot of fun times around the dinner table and at events and celebrations with them. My deepest sympathies to Mrs. Kornic, Steve and Rebeca, Dianna and Kim. Mr. Kornic has left a warm legacy that won't be forgotten.

Pat
I have just read Al's obituary printed in This Week and was surprised and saddened at his passing. Even though we have not been in touch for a very long time it does not erase the memories our families shared as neighbors and friends. For me it was babysitting Diana and Kim, Steven playing ball hockey with Gaŕry on the patio, Al tending his huge vegetable garden and taking on the role as an old grouch and you being the mother I missed. There are so many to share but know that the Kornic's were family from my teens to my forties until the complexities of work and life frayed our connection.
My deepest condolences to all of you: Pat, Diana, Kim and Steven and Rebeca.
With fondest memories
Carol Gifford

The obituary mentions that Al taught roller skating. This is very significant to me for the reasons below.
It was 1955. My friend, Edie, said she had just met a man she quite liked and wanted me to meet him. He owned a restaurant downtown Oshawa so we could just go for coffee. We arrive at the restaurant and there is a young man behind the counter who spoke to Edie as we walked in. I thought to myself, if this is Ben, I don’t know what she sees in him. Little did I know this was my future husband. Ben had to leave the restaurant and had asked Al to help him out. Edie introduced us and I ignored his attempts at conversation. We left shortly afterwards.
A few days later my phone rang and a voice on the other end asked me if I would like to go to a movie. I knew who it was and I said no, I was too tired. Al didn’t give up and over the next two weeks, kept calling until I finally said yes. He picked me up that evening, had told me to wear slacks, there were no jeans at that time, and when I asked where we were going, he said roller skating. Well, I looked at him and said, just so you know, I don’t do well on ice skates and have never been on roller skates. He replied back that I would be fine as he taught roller skating and I would learn quickly.
After falling about five times in a row and pulling him down with me, he very nicely suggested I go up in the booth and take over playing the records. I didn’t mind doing that as I liked the songs that were being played. While up in the booth, I casually glance down to the rink below and I see my date for the evening surrounded by three young women. For 45 minutes I watched my date for the evening, skate arm in arm around the arena with different women, some snuggling in a bit too close. Nothing like competition to pique one’s interest. I decided I should go down to the rink and sit in the seats and make my presence known. I was 15 at the time. Al was 21. Thus was the start of a 67 year relationship. Love you always, Al. Pat
