Obituary of Janet Marie Stacey

Janet Marie Stacey

(nee: Hicks)

February 5, 1937 – April 27, 2022

Janet was born in Clinton, ON on February 5, 1937 and was the eldest sister to Bill, Bob, Nancy, and John.  Her family followed her father as he was stationed through the Canadian Air Force, and lived in Hensall, ON, Parkhill, ON, Saskatoon, SK, and ended up in Trenton, ON.

Janet earned her Registered Nursing degree through St. Michael’s Hospital School of Nursing, and the University of Toronto, on June 3, 1958.  She nursed patients in various places, including Lunenburg, NS, Laguna Beach, CA-USA, Trenton, ON, and Bowmanville, ON.

Janet met her husband, John Stacey, when she rented an apartment from him on Concession Street in Bowmanville.  She married John on April 12, 1969, and made her home, raising 3 sons, in the same building.

Janet spent her entire life caring and tending to others, starting in childhood, as she helped to care for her younger siblings and her ailing grandmother, through her professional years as a nurse from 1958 to 1973, as a mother and proud housewife, and later as she cared for her husband with his declining health from 1985 until his death in 2008.  She kept busy volunteering with the New To You Shoppe and other various outreach programs through her church, St. Paul’s United, until she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2014 and moved to Ottawa, ON in 2015 to be closer to her sons.

Janet died on April 27, 2022, after a long and ferocious battle with dementia.  She was surrounded by her sons, daughter-in-law and grandchildren when she took her last breath.

She will be forever remembered by her sons, Ted (Jennifer), Jim and Mike, her grandchildren Elizabeth and Elliot, her brothers Bill (Wanda) and John (Gail), sister Nancy, Sister-in-law Carolyn, and many nieces and nephews, as well as the entire extended Stacey family.

Janet was predeceased by her husband John Stacey, parents Kenneth and Jean Hicks, brother Bob Hicks, Sister-in-law Kathy, and her Aunt Laura and Uncle Russ Ireland.

The family would like to thank the staff and volunteers at the Peter D. Clarke, Willow House, Long-Term Care Facility in Ottawa, ON.  Janet was loved and cared for by the people there and was treated with the greatest respect on every step of this long and arduous journey.

Visitation will be on Sunday, May 1, 2022 from 4:00 to 8:00pm and Janet will be celebrated on Monday, May 2, 2022 at 10:30am at the Northcutt Elliott Funeral Home in Bowmanville, ON, and her ashes will be interred with her husband John at the Bowmanville Cemetery.
