Obituary of David Joseph Zavagno

David Joseph Zavagno, aged 70, of Clarington, passed away at home on Saturday August 16, 2014. Dave was born in Toronto, Ontario on January 12, 1944. He attended New Toronto High School and began his working career as a draftsman. He moved into manufacturing and worked as a purchaser for Jacuzzi, then for Stanley. Finally he entered into a partnership to set up Steelwood Doors and served as Vice President of Manufacturing until his retirement in 2002. Dave enjoyed drawing, designing and building whimsical gifts, renovating, maintaining the grounds of his property, and collecting and restoring antiques. Every project he completed with his own special blend of creativity and attention to detail. He appreciated music, architecture, art, woodcarving, stand-up comedy, "rat rods", fine cuisine, and a good bottle of wine. He also loved a succession of Irish Wolfhounds. David was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December 2012 and spent the next twenty months fighting it in every way he could. During this time he bought a "rat rod" and helped to direct its rebuilding, then discovered "Steampunk" and began designing and building industrial-style lamps. He led everyone who loved him throughout the journey with optimism and bravery. Dave had a true heart and loved unconditionally. Dave is survived by his wife, Ann (nee Webb), first wife, Sandra (nee Sills), children: Julie, Aimee, Maggie (Lee), Lee (Mel), Connal (Jen) and Quinn, sisters: Tina (Ray) and Gina (Glen), and brother, Jerry (Pat). He also leaves behind nieces Grace, Lindsay, Bonnie and Kelly; nephews Galen, Gideon, Connor and Paul. Dave was predeceased by his mother Inez (nee Ongaro) and father, Guiseppe (Joe).
