Obituary of Milton Zarkovich

Milton “Sonny” Zarkovich passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, in his 81st year. Born in 1941, Milton graduated with a degree in business administration from Ryerson University and was fortunate to spend his career following his passion for real estate development. Perhaps his most notable professional achievement was the successful development of the multi-tower, high-rise Toronto condominium complex, The Riviera Club. Milton never lost his passion for real estate development, working in the field up until the age of 75. True to form, even in his final months, Milton continued to work on interesting real estate ideas and was always excited to share them with others.

Milton was born in Hamilton, Ontario, the son of Dorothy and Daniel Zarkovich, and enjoyed his Serbian culture and heritage. His older sister Millie (Herancourt) and his younger sister Sondra (Millar) both knew their brother to be joyful and generous, always going out of his way to help them and others; blessed with eternal optimism.

Milton was dedicated to his family, both his beloved wife of 42 years, Ileane (Rahme), and his daughters Erica and Andrea, of whom he was extremely proud. Milton celebrated the marriage of his daughter, Erica, to Dave Suchon in 2011 and the birth of his two beautiful grandchildren, David Jr. and Veronica, in 2013 and 2016. Milton was a tremendous Papa to David and Veronica. He imbued his grandkids with his infectious optimism and showered them with boundless energy, engaging in countless hours playing soccer at the park, epic water fights by the backyard pool, and playing Monopoly, always as the “top hat” and (almost) always winning.

Milton had a tremendous energy and zest for life. He enjoyed spirited discussions on almost any topic and long walks in nature with his wife and family. He was a lifelong formidable opponent to Ileane in Scrabble and waged “spirited” battles with friends and family on the tennis court. Many would remember stories from “Uncle Sonny”. He was always putting people at ease, making people smile and maintained a boyish sense of humour his entire life. When Milton entered the room, everyone felt it – he illuminated the space with his warmth, optimism and good humour. He loved life and lived a full one. He saw the best in everything and everyone and we are grateful to have known and loved him.

Cremation has taken place and final arrangements made through Northcutt Elliott. A private celebration of life will follow on his birthday, June 26. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Ed’s House Northumberland Hospice Care, in memory of Milton Zarkovich, where he and his family received tremendous assistance during his last few days.
