To Linda, Karen, Al, Paul and families:
I had the privilege of knowing and working with Jim as a fellow member of the Samuel Wilmot Nature Area Management Advisory Committee for many years. Jim was already a “ veteran” of the Committee when I joined in 2004.
I recall many enjoyable hours monitoring, cleaning and installing bird boxes with Jim throughout the Nature Area – something which he and May did entirely on their own for many years. I still do this with assistance from other Committee members and think of Jim whenever I do so.
Jim rarely missed any of our monthly meetings. He didn’t speak a lot at those meetings , but when he did, the rest of us listened and respected his experience and opinions.
During the last months of his tenure with the Committee, he participated in all of our activities and events, even when it was clear that he was physically uncomfortable.
Jim left a huge hole when his health forced him to “ retire” from the Committee. He was and will be missed as a valued colleague – and as a friend.

My Uncle Jim and Auntie May always treated me with the warmest of welcomes during the many summers I spent visiting Canada. I was treated like a part of their family from the instant I first met them. They later extended this welcome to my husband David and the wonderful summer holidays to Canada continued-and i hope they do for many years to come. We always loved hearing Jims stories about his time in BC, and adventures exploring Canada. An incredibly quick witted and well read man, Jim always had a tale to tell, which made everyone smile...Although I do remember there being a bit of teasing for us Scots to watch out for the bears! May and Jim's legacy of course is their beautiful cottage which they built with their family-and stories of this were always told by the campfire with a few beers ...I always love being told of the Clelands all squeezed in the cabin and a little kiddie rolling out of their bunk beds and being popped back into a bunk-wether it was their own, and empty or not was another matter :) Its an amazing example of hard work and ambition- and the result is a truly magnificent cottage which has given their family so many wonderful memories-some of which we have been lucky to be part of....) So much fun and laughter during visits there, with everyone joining in the tales and adventures. Evenings were spent enjoying each others company, while watching out for Rockie the Racoon munching on his peanut butter sandwiches. During the day feeding the blue jays, the chipmunks and the hummingbirds- May and Jim took care of everyone-even the critters....I remember the cupboards were always stocked incase any burglars broke in during the winter, so they would also be well fed :) We have loved introducing our own children to the cottage and the lake, and have missed it dearly during the pandemic. Its simply a special place, full of special memories of two very special people who can now lie together in peace.

I first met Jim when I visited my Canadian family in 1975 - a long-held ambition fulfilled as we had always looked forward to reading the newsy letters that May regularly sent my mum. The welcome was as warm as I had expected it to be - May had, after all, managed to find herself a Belfastman! My next two visits reinforced the sense of welcome at May and Jim’s. My memories will be of May home-making - I have lots of her recipes in my collection - and Jim in his garden. You will all miss him but your many happy memories of your family life growing up will hopefully bring you a lot of comfort. Your dad is now at peace and with May ❤️

We have great memories of holidays spent with May & Jim and their lovely family.
Jim was such a gentle and dignified man. He worked tirelessly for his family and had a wealth of knowledge on different topics.
I can picture May making his cuppa and him coming in from his beloved garden.
Also him coming back from bike rides having given younger men in our family a run for their money.
Our only consolation is that he is at peace now and will be with our lovely May once more.
Love to all the family from June and Bob in Dundee, Scotland. Xo

Very sorry to hear of Jim's passing. Personally, I will miss seeing Jim out paddling on the lake. He always had great insights for us at the Cottage Association meetings. Condolences to his family.

It's a sad day to realize that Jim is gone. Great photo. I remember him, never letting us down with his presence at so many Cottage Association meetings - paddling over (Old School) with a sense of calm in his steady stroke and sturdy gunnel stance, always with a friendly wave, arriving with that familiar chortle of his. But he never just 'showed up'. He was a man of vision and a true lake icon - which is why it's hard to see him gone. He always had strong opinions and wasted no time in being heard - a rare treat in these overly-politically correct times. You would know exactly where he stood - and that was always valuable input. A nice guy. And a very sad time for his family - but a time to realize that Alzheimer's can steal nothing more from him now. I hope that - wherever he is – he can continue to paddle and reflect that aura of peacefulness that always seemed to follow his every stroke. Fortescue will miss his impact and friendly smile.

My sincerest condolence on the passing of your dad. Your Dad married my best friend, I remember their very first apartment he had a beautiful aquarium of tropical fish. On our visits your dad would enjoy a game of chess with my husband Sammy, not Sammy's cup of tea he'd prefer a hockey game, we had such good times together. Your mum and I were truly blessed when we met those two young men who imigrated from N. Ireland many years ago (1959).
