Obituary of Nora Young
1917 2016
The family of Nora Young is saddened to announce her passing, at Lakeridge Health in Whitby, on March 26, 2016, at age 98.
Nora was a true original, a lively and generous person, and an incredible pioneer for womens sports in Canada. She was a trailblazer in the 1920s and 30s, when ordinary Canadian women were beginning to play sports for the first time. A national champion in basketball, javelin and cycling, she was also a softball player at the famed Sunnyside Stadium, an early hockey player, and one of the first women to race a bike competitively in Canada. As a young cyclist she distinguished herself in several famous races where she was one of few women competing. Nora played in top venues all over the world, in front of the likes of William Randolph Hearst and Mary Pickford. She began her athletic career at age 11 and continued into her late 80s in the Seniors (Masters) Olympics.
