Dear Don, Dana, Eric and Families
I just now got the sad news of Irene’s passing and wanted to send my deepest sympathy to all of you. She was truly a warm and kind person and I’m sure she will be missed so much by all of you and so many people whose lives she touched. I have so many memories of her at the cottage when I was young; making bread pudding and other delicious treats, teaching me to play solitaire and just lending an ear for a chat. It seems so strange when we go to the cottage now and she and Don are not there. Your family has had such a difficult year! I just wanted you to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers and hope you will find peace in all of the wonderful memories of your wife/mom/grandma Love Kathy Slinger and Family

So very sorry to hear of Irene’s passing. Irene substituted in the library for me on a number of occasions when I was at Hobbs and she always did a wonderful job. When she and Don moved into Bowmanville Creek, I often got a chance to touch base with them when I would go to visit with my mom. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you Don, we and your family. We know Irene will be missed by many.

Our sincere and heartfelt condolences to Don and the family. We shared many wonderful and happy times both when we resided in Oshawa as well as our favourite Lake: the Big Rideau.
Irene was a most gracious host and we enjoyed sharing meals at a local Greek restaurant and then coffee and tea apres dinner at their home.
Many fond memories never to be forgotten.

Dana and I met when we started Grade 7 at BSPS and became fast friends and have remained close all our lives. In those early years, one of the great benefits of friendship was spending time with Dana and his family.
Visiting the Peebles household on Hilltop Drive was always a welcome respite for me navigating my early teens. The sense of calm, smell of freshly baked treats, air of studiousness (all 4 of the Peebles forever had have their noses in any printed material available), and a general sense of order and domestic mastery. On every visit, without fail, Mrs. Peebles (at 57 I still can’t call her Irene) would warmly greet me in the entry with a big smile, wiping her hands on her apron, taking a break from concocting whatever culinary delight she was working on, to have a conversation.
These conversations stay with me today – not the content, but the act itself. These were not simple, perfunctory exchanges about the weather – there was friendly earnestness about them that made it clear to me that Mrs. Peebles had a genuine interest in understanding me, what I thought, and always made it feel important that I’d come to visit – that somehow it really mattered. It made an impression on me, and it did matter. Over the decades since then, on the occasions we’d see each other, the conversations remained as purposeful and heartfelt.
It’s clear that Dana and Eric’s Mom has made similar impacts with many others over the years. As difficult as it must be to say goodbye for Dana, Eric, and Mr. Peebles (at 57 I can’t bring myself to call him Don either), I hope it’s comforting to know how Irene has touch so many in meaningful ways.
Thinking of you all today.
Tim (Baxter)

I had the privilege of meeting Irene at Community Care, we were on the Local advisory committee. Then Irene knew I cleaned houses and hired me. I cleaned for Irene and Don for many years and we became friends. Irene and I would have great conversations as we would visit before I started cleaning. I kept in touch with Irene and Don after they moved and didn’t need me to clean for them. Irene was such a good listener and was always interested in my family and what I’d been doing. Irene to me was like a grandma, so kind, caring and full of life.Irene never ever said a bad thing about anyone. I will miss her so much, she was a wonderful person. Sorry for your loss, Don and family, I will keep you all in my prayers, Karen Nichol

My heartfelt sympathy to Irene's family with her passing. I first met Irene through her generous community work with Community Care - she was the local board chair and one of the committee members who hired me for a position with the agency in 1988 for a rewarding career that spanned over 30 years. She was truly a lady! I always admired her beautiful hand writing, amazing baked creations and those sparkling blue eyes. May memories of her unconditional love comfort you in the days to come.
Sincerely,
Sally Barrie
