Obituary of Donna Marie Mathus
Donna Marie Mathus
February 29 1940 – August 3 2021
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Donna Marie Mathus announce her passing at Bowmanville Hospital with family by her side after a brief battle with cancer. Left to mourn are Donna’s loving husband of 58 years Arnold Mathus, and daughters Lori Bauman (Derek) and Shelley Bernabei (Emilio). Donna was also a devoted Nana to her cherished grandchildren Brennah and Emma Bauman and Chloe and Travis Bernabei.
Mom was born in Oshawa ON as a leap year baby to Frank and Harriett Hooper. Soon to follow were her four brothers Ron (Carol), Gary (Judy), Bruce (Judy) and David (Jim), all presently residing in Newcastle ON, and sometimes jokingly referred to as Hooperville. Mom also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and cousins that she maintained close relationships with over the years.
Mom left the Ontario area as a young bride after marrying Dad and settled into a military lifestyle. After moving around some, they ended up in the Comox Valley where they retired. Mom had many friends in the area and always kept busy with her many activities and projects. She was a member of Sorority for many years, and also discovered she had a flair for many types of arts and crafts. Mom first excelled at ceramics, then later found she had an amazing talent for tole painting, which she shared and taught to others at her home studio. She also did beautiful cross stitching and card making. As well, Mom was known for her baking and cooking skills and often had friends and family requesting her recipes or asking her to make that “special dish” for potlucks and get togethers. Mom and Dad eventually moved back to Ontario where she spent the last few years close to her extended family.
At Moms request there will be no funeral service. There is to be a private cremation and a Celebration of Life to be held in Newcastle at a later date. Arrangements and condolences entrusted to NORTHCUTT ELLIOTT FUNERAL HOME, 53 Division Street North Bowmanville.
