Obituary of James Thornton Smith
James (Jim) Smith passed away at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville with his best friend, Keith and his nephew Stuart by his side on May 9th, 2021
Jim was a wonderful man who always had a smile and a sparkle in his eye. He had impeccable integrity and remembered when times were simpler.
A lover of jazz and old movies, he made incredible models of sailing ships. Every square inch of each model was made by hand.
A longtime resident of Cedar Crest Beach in Bowmanville he was beloved by his friends and neighbours. He will be missed by his favourite waitresses at Swiss Chalet; Brandy, Dawn and Kayla.
He was a veteran of the Second World War who fought against tyranny and despotism in Paton’s 69th Infantry Regiment and liberated southern Germany. He survived the Battle of The Bulge and met the Russians at the Elbe.
Jim has gone to join his beloved Frieda who passed before him. He was 95 years old and we are very sad to say goodbye.
He is survived by Frieda’s family Elaine & Mel (deceased) Smith, Bert & Gwendolyn Smith, Marie & Glen (deceased) Smith, Ken & Sylvia (deceased) Smith, Verna & Harry (deceased) Bird as well as several nieces and nephews.
At Jim’s request no services are being held. Arrangements entrusted to NORTHCUTT ELLIOTT FUNERAL HOME, 53 Division St. Bowmanville. Memorial Donations may be made to Durham Region Hospice, Clarington.
