Petrus posted a condolence

My Dad, Petrus (Peter) born in the Govert Flinckstraat of Amsterdam six days after the German invasion of Holland. He lost his Father (Johannes) in 1951 at the age of 10, far to young for a boy to lose his mentor on the way to manhood. He worked the farmer’s open market in streets of Amsterdam selling potatoes to help his Mother (Antonia) pay the bills. His mother remarried a Canadian soldier (Jack) who remained in Holland after the war. In August 1958, Petrus immigrated to Canada with his now larger family. Little money in his pocket, could not speak a word of English but excited for a new a new adventure. He originally settled in Parry Sound, Ontario where he met my mom Roxie. They were married in 1961 and they started their own family. I remember the fond days of driving together with my Dad to hockey. I learned to appreciate all genres of music, country music was forced upon me, you didn’t touch the radio knobs in my Dad’s car. Man! I had cool uncles that listened to the Beatles and the Stones what’s this country crap? Oddly enough, I find myself playing that exact same music he played and singing along knowing every word. Merle Haggard “daddy Frank played the guitar and the French harp” Those songs bring back such wonderful memories of my father. He always found the time for us boys no matter how hard or many hours he worked. Sitting in cold hockey arenas, coaching us on the soccer field or wonderful camping vacations. I remember his love for animals, telling me “kindness to an animal comes back in spades, it’s pure love”. Probably why I have two dogs of my own that I couldn’t live without. I really didn’t get to say goodbye to my dad to tell him one more time that I love him, ironically he was scared to death of Covid-19. It will forever weigh on my heart and like all of us, wish I had a little more time to spend with him. Dad I really believe the mold was broken because they just don’t make men like you anymore!
I love you with all my heart. You will be deeply missed. God speed!
Your son Petrus.

Dad, I am often told I am just like you.
I am honored beyond measure if that is true.
You were the best example of what a man should be.
I am overwhelmed that someone would say that of me.
I never told you enough, how proud I am to be called your son,
Now that you are gone, I want to tell everyone.
You gave me much more than a name,
Someday, I hope my son says the same. We do not need a special day to bring you to our minds.
The days we do not think of you are very hard to find.
Each morning when we awake we know that you are gone.
And no one knows the heartache as we try to carry on.
Our hearts still ache with sadness and secret tears still flow.
What it meant to lose you no one will ever know.
Our thoughts are always with you, your place no one can fill.
In life we loved you dearly; in death we love you still.
There will always to be a heartache, and often a silent tear.
But always a precious memory of the days when you were here.
If tears would make a staircase, and heartaches make a lane,
We’d walk the path to heaven and bring you home again.
We hold you close within our hearts; and there you will remain,
To walk with us throughout our lives until we meet again.
Our family chain is broken now, and nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.

My deepest condolences to Roxie on the passing of her dear husband Peter (as I knew him). He was a very generous man often making donations to the silent auctions at the church or at the SVDP store. He also contributed his time to the efforts of the Saint Vincent de Paul Foodbank. Our prayers are with you and your family at this difficult time, Roxie.
May Petrus now rest in peace.
Your fellow Vincentian, Hedy
