Sorry to hear about the passing of Leo.
Our thougths go out to Aunt Annie and theis childeren. We remember him as a cheerful and sweet uncle with a lot of humor.
In 2016 he was a guest at our wedding, together with Neil. We greatly appreciated their visit. Together with dad (Wim) they enjoyed each other's presence, the stories of the past and music of the accordeon.
In 2018 we visited uncle Leo. He proudly showed us around and told us about his beautiful life in Canada. For us this was a great experience.
Dear Uncle Leo, despite the great distance we have always felt a strong family bond. Thanks fot this.
We wish the family much strength.

On December 24, 2020 our family lost an amazing father.
Proud to be the daughter of Leo van den Hoven. The strongest man I know. My dad taught me to be strong & instilled hard working ethics in my life. I am my father’s daughter. When I am working in the garden or outside, I will always think of you, Dad.
My family was fortunate to live on a country property. We had the best childhood thanks to my Dad. My Dad loved gardening & being outdoors. We had a huge garden, ponds, & a pool. We all worked & played outside often. We grew & sold strawberries, raspberries, & vegetables. Dad loved animals, and his love for Scooby-doo (it was the 70’s), & later, Tiger was clear.
Spencer enjoyed spending time with his Opa. Playing crib was exciting & how Dad laughed when he was winning. He couldn’t wait to laugh out loud. Priceless moments we will always treasure.
We will miss your infectious laugh & your strength.
(Spencer): When I was younger, and still in elementary school, I would be taken to my Oma & Opa’s house to wait for the bus every morning. The time I spent there in the morning, I would occasionally play card games with my Opa. I never expected to be taught how to play cribbage as a 9-year-old, but nonetheless, I still had a great time beating him and an even greater time when I skunked him. He was a good sportsman about it and genuinely enjoyed seeing me happy, which made me happy in return, and I will never forget those kinds of expressions he had.
Love you dad (Opa)

My father loved his family dearly, loved the outdoors, and loved animals. He loved family events in Canada and in Holland, especially Christmas as you can see in the pictures. He loved working outdoors including building a log road in the bush so the kids could use the ATV in the summer and snowmobile in the winter. He loved all the family pets and was their favourite as well since he was the soft touch to get food and treats.
He treasured all the time that he spent with his family just as we treasure all our memories with him. He was very fond of his grandchildren and they loved spending time with him. Kristen loved to follow her Opa around and can still picture him in his Blue Coveralls. She wanted to be just like him as you can see with their matching shovels. Daniel loved spending time with Opa in the pool and liked listening to the stories about the animals that Opa encountered each day – the birds, the deer, the blue heron, the otter, the fox, and all the other animals he would look out for each day.
We know that he will be proudly riding his favourite tractor, the Farmall Cub, in heaven with his faithful canine companions Scooby Doo and Tigger running alongside.
Dad, you have worked hard all your life. Rest in Peace.
We love you, we are proud of you, and we dearly miss you,
John, Marissa, Kristen, and Daniel

We had the great pleasure of knowing Leo for nearly 30 years.
Anytime we would go out to Kelley & Neils he’d be there working away somewhere doing something, thats what made him happy. But he always stopped to come sit down and join us for a coffee or a beer.
He was always smiling no matter what the day or chore.
I always used to say to Kelley...he’s just the cutest little man :) he reminds me so much of our PaPère...
I’ve never seen a harder working person then Leo...well besides you Neil.
He taught you well and I know you will miss him dearly working along side you but know he’ll be watching over the property making sure you’re doing it just right! :-)
We love you both Kelley & Neil and we send you and your family Neil much love & strength during this difficult time.
Please know we are here for you.
Love xo

It is with heavy hearts that we send our condolences to Neil, Kelley and the Vandenhoven family. We have been so blessed to have shared many meals and coffees with Leo at Neil and Kelley’s home while he was there helping with a job or project or celebrating a family event. Leo always looked so happy working side by side Neil on one of their projects. You could see the pride in his eyes at their joint accomplishments. Handsome Leo had a friendly smile for everyone. He loved sharing his stories of Holland or talking about the GM days and we loved to listen. I know how deeply he will be missed.

On December 24th 2020 I lost a great man. My father Leo van den Hoven. He was a huge influence on my life .He taught me about work ethics , motivation and dependability . I will miss his humour and all the time we spent together on our numerous projects. I would not be where I am today without him . He had a love for animals and gardening that he shared with his family. Nothing made him happier than a hard day's work cutting firewood and cleaning up the bush or pulling weeds in his garden. My wife Kelley and I along with our pets will miss our coffee breaks and treats with stories of Holland. R.I.P Dad we love you and we will miss you❤

Hi Jackie and family
I am so sorry for your loss especially so close to Christmas. He looks and from what I read a very remarkable man. I believe my dad and your dad worked together at GM. Around the same age and a Dutchman. He always spoke of a Dutchman he worked with and I never did ask his name. They both worked in the North plant. Sending hugs and love to you all.

My Dad's full name was Leonardus Johannes van den Hoven. I was named after my Dad but given the shorter version of Leonard John. I spell my last name as Vandenhoven but the correct way is van den Hoven. The 'van' means 'from', the 'den' means 'the' and 'Hoven' means 'garden'. In Holland we would be under 'H' in the phone directory since the 'van den' is just a prefix. My Dad came to Canada in the 50's and arrived in Halifax with almost nothing and built a comfortable life here in Canada for his family. He worked hard from a young age and kept that up into his eighties. My Dad respected my love of running and biking but thought it was completely unnecessary since there was always work to be done and that was the best exercise. I never saw him exercise for that reason and he lived to just one month shy of his ninetieth birthday. My Dad kept our 10 acre property in pristine condition and he was proud of it. He learned how to expertly cut trees during one of the GM labour disputes and used that skill for many years to maintain our woodlot and heat our home. I have memories and video of him cutting up dead trees and I suspect there are not many who could make faster work of that than him. That almost got him killed in his early eighties when he got confused and ran in the wrong direction and was knocked unconscious by a falling tree. After a short time in the hospital he was as back to himself again. In February of this year my Mom's health deteriorated and she could no longer look after him so he went to Strathaven in Bowmanville just prior to the pandemic. We did not get to see him much because of the various lockdowns but there was FaceTime and some social distance visits in the summer. He was very happy at Strathaven and seemed well cared for and we are grateful for that . Thank you for all the condolences!!
