George and Carol Van Dyk posted a condolence

In 1952 the Van Dyk family of 7 children, Mem and Heit immigrated to Canada from the Netherlands, because our family was so large I stayed with Walter and Rose and the rest of the family stayed with our Uncle Sam and Aunt Lies until we were able to settle into our own home. A fond memory of mine is on my 10th birthday Walter and Rose gave me a Hopalong Casidy wallet which I treasured for many years. Another memory is when Walter and Rose lived on the Lovekin farm, Walter taught me to drive a Massey Harris 44 row crop tractor at the age of 9, I was so thrilled with the experience, in later years I bought one, which to this day I have in a shed at the back of our house. You learned to grow up fast and pull your weight at an early age.
Our condolences go out to Walters family. George and Carol Van Dyk

It is with broken hearts and our sincerest condolences that we write this to the family this evening. We had moved to Ontario from N.B. where I am from and Walter loved hearing George was from Halifax. We were blessed to buy a house next to he and his beloved Rose. We were new home owners and he taught us about vegetable garden and laughed at our little 8x10 foot area,I would come home and find the maple tree pruned or given ideas on a million things about home maintenance. He always knew who to phone for masonry work or any thing else. With both sets of parents and the kids grandparents in the maritimes it was lovely to have them next door. We enjoyed over the years seeing the kids come every year for summer camp on the court. They even bought our camper from us. Walter remembered every time the last few years we would see him at Tim's of the funny story (at least to him) of how we went to the backyard to question someone checking out the backdoor and windows to see if they were open. This was when they were away and we thought someone might be breaking in. Turned out to be Stan doing a house check. Walter laughed about this for years. We wanted you to know how much we appreciated having them for neighbours when our own families were so very far away. Thinking of you all. He is now with his beloved Rose.

Our condolences from the Janssen family in London.
I had opportunity to meet Walter informally many times, but a specific memory that I thought of recently was a conversation about 2009 or so about the origins of Knox Christian School. A think-tank type group was talking about the school's past, present, and future and Walter was asked and was most willing to speak to the original intentions of the founding generation. It was fascinating and quite inspiring to hear about purpose driven era so long ago.
May God comfort the Piersma family as they celebrate his life and mourn his absence.

I was supposed to be flying to Ontario in a few weeks to celebrate Pake's 90th birthday with all the family. I'm so sad to not be able to say goodbye. I have wonderful memories of getting together at Pake and Beppe's for sleepovers with the cousins, and Father's day and Mother's day BBQ's. The best gathering's were the summer Piersma camping trips and our HUGE Piersma family Christmas. Here's a memory from the last Piersma Christmas I was able to attend 10 years ago. The family has grown since then. I always felt a connection with Pake since it was Halifax he came to first aboard the RMS Franconia from Holland.
Pake, we love you and miss you and we're so thankful for the incredible family that we're part of.
