Georg and Elfi were long time friends of my family, growing up in north Oshawa I loved to ride my bicycle out into the concessions and make my way out to Hampton to drop by and have a visit. Georg loved his old VW Westfalia van and shiny moped which he rode everywhere. He kept a beautiful garden out back and grew fresh herbs, tomatoes and all sorts of veggies, there was a huge pond on the property that had fish in as well. I loved my visits especially when he would invite me to stay for a quick lunch and whip up something fantastic in the kitchen. I used to spend hours watching the fish tank he kept in the basement full of exotic fresh water fish and loved to play with that wonderful airdale pup he had. I can picture him now with those round lens glasses perched up high on his nose and that huge smile he shared so often. I will miss you Georg but I know we will meet again in another life. My deepest condolences to Elfi and the rest of the family. Joel Wilson

Dearest Elfi, I am in shock and in disbelief. It was Georg who helped me start my teaching career and i owe all that I am in teaching culinary to him. He was an amazing mentor, always kind, caring and supportive. I will never forget his warm smile and great sense of humour. He always saw the positive in any situation. I'm sharing the photo when you both came along with our student field trip to meet Mark McEwan.

Dear Elfi
On behalf of me and my father Frank Finlay, we express our sincere condolences. You are in our thoughts and prayers. We are both former colleagues of Georg from General Vanier. Frank remembers Georg to be a good man and appreciated his leadership skills as well as his amazing culinary/chef skills. I remember as a new teacher how he made me feel welcome.
We wish you strength during these challenging times.

May your wonderful memories help you in this time of deep personal loss.
It was so nice to be able to have you and Georg over for "tea". We don't shine the silver tea set for many people, but it was an honour to do so for you and Georg! Mary Lou and Peter

Liebe Elfi,

Growing up, the anticipation of a visit from Uncle Georg and Aunt Elfi was palpable. Not just from us kids, but my parents too. Everyone was so excited for them to come and stay with us, we would take turns standing watch out the front window, waiting for their van to pull up. If you watched hard enough, you could catch glimpses of the van through the trees on the road through town, before they turned up our hill. If one of us was lucky enough to see it, we would shout, "THEY'RE HERE!" There was always such a mad scramble as all four of us rushed out of the house to greet them as they pulled in to the driveway. They have always inspired so much love and joy, and continue to do so today.
Uncle Georg was so warm, loving, and kind. He and Elfi tolerated all the snooping around in their van I did as a child, knowing how fascinated I was with their awesome campervan. Whenever we got to spend time with them, we would cross our fingers that Uncle Georg would cook us something, anything. His mastery in the kitchen was something to behold! You could see and taste his passion for cooking in everything he created. And their garden! You can really feel all the love and energy they put in to their garden. The flowers were my favorite thing to see when we got to visit their home. I can still picture it perfectly, in full bloom, if I close my eyes and draw on those memories.
As I have grown, Uncle Georg was always there to lend his vote of confidence. Even remotely, whenever I post a picture of food I have baked or prepared, his encouragement would come in the form of a facebook cheer. Getting that praise and feeling his love from afar always fills me with his support and love, and makes me smile. It warms my heart, and I will miss that terribly.
I am hopeful that the time before I get to see Elfi will pass quickly, and I can give her all the love and hugs and support that I am unable to give now. Being far away is never harder than when you can't be with your family that you love, when you could most use being together. For now, I will send my love virtually, and count down the days until we are together again. It has been too long.
All my love to Uncle Georg and Aunt Elfi, now and always.

Georg was a special person in all of our hearts, as Elfi so wonderfully captured in his obituary. We had the honour of getting to know him in a way that few did - first thing in the morning, half awake and soaking wet. There is something unique about the relationships that we develop each weekday a.m. getting in our exercise at the Courtice pool. We share and discuss stories both happy and sad, news both good and bad - and we worry when someone doesn't show up without explanation. In many ways our relationships feel more intimate and special seeing each other every morning, and Georg was no exception. He liked and accepted everybody, no matter who they were or what their background, and was open and kind to all. There will be an empty space in the pool, and in our hearts, as we mourn his loss. We are fortunate that he gave us many good memories that will eventually help to fill that void. We miss you Georg and remember, "what happens at the pool stays at the pool" still applies! Sincerely, the pool gang at Courtice - Gord, Sharron, Betty, Olaf, Gerry, Marion, Lorraine, Maureen & Kristin

Dear Elfi, we are saddened by the passing of Georg Khron, a long time close friend of our family. We met 42 years ago when we moved here from Jamaica.
My sister Lyn Gayle (deceased), her husband Chubby Cole (deceased), and Las Gayle (her husband and also deceased) were very close friends of Georg. All were practicing teachers in the Durham Region.
We shared Georg’s passion of gardening and were fortunate to visit for several guided tours of his well laid out vegetable garden and your nicely decorated house. We looked forward to seeing Georg’s garden in summer and his discussions of the various herbs in his latest dish. He made the best Black Forest Cake and we have such wonderful memories of you both.
We wish you Elfi the very best in coping during this very difficult time. On behalf of my wife and children, we send sincere condolences.

I first met Georg Krohn when I joined the Bowmanville Rotary club six years ago. At the time he was the director of the Youth Services committee and I became a member of this committee. For the next few years we worked closely together and became good friends. I came to realize what a wonderful person Georg was. He was very friendly to everyone, very generous and always had a smile on his face. I also came to learn later that he was a great chef. Georg was a great promoter of all the youth services that were supported by the Rotary club, particularly the High School bursaries and the bursaries for the Matawa Education Centre. Every Summer he would fly to Thunder Bay, at his own expense, to attend the award ceremony organized by the Marawa Education Centre. My wife and I visited Georg and his wife Elfie a few times and we were always made to feel very welcome by both of them. Elfie is also a very good artist and we were very grateful to receive one her drawings as a gift.
Georg was one of those rare human beings and we shall miss him.
RIP Georg.

Dear Elfi,
I am so sorry to hear of Georg's passing.
I hope that you are managing alright. This is such a horrible time to be left alone.
I was shocked, when I learned that Georg had gone, as I had just been talking to you and Georg a couple of weeks ago at the end of my driveway, when you were driving by.
I was so happy to see you both out and about. It was a bright spot in a dismal time.
You and Georg have always been such wonderful friends and supporters of mine since we met almost 20 years ago. I remember the first time Georg arrived here on his motor bike, he was so interested and excited to find my place and my work. I will never forget him stopping by every once in a while when he was out exploring the countryside, just to see how I was doing and to say hello.
I hope that you will soon be able to get out and about and I hope that you will come and visit my studio when you are feeling up to it.
I am not far away.
Thinking of you,
David

I first met Georg and Elfi in the mid 1970's when we moved to Hampton. We hit
it off because we had something in common; a sporty Volvo and a Doberman Pinscher. We
had been friends ever since. I found Georg to be caring, kind, and truly dedicated to
Canada and his community. He was a great chef and teacher and was even on a first name basis
with the likes of Louis Armstrong when he cheffed in Switzerland. We regularly curled in Oshawa
and had dinner out, afterwards. Sharon and I were so happy to have Georg and Elfi over for a get
together and snacks in February. Sharon will always remember Georg as sweet, gentle, and caring.
Georg and Elfi had a full cupboard of adventures in life together. Georg was a "prince" of a man,
and will be missed by all who knew him.

Elfi,
We are so sorry to hear of the passing of your beloved Georg. I have never met a man that smiled as much as Georg and always in a joyful mood any time we talked. He will always be remembered for what he did to improve life in the village of Hampton and one of those improvements was the park bench that we see outside our window at the Post Office. Every time we look at that bench we will think of Georg.

Our minds are in such a whirl, trying to think of what to say, having no words come, but there is so very much to say. From that very first picture on Georg and Elfi leaving the building when they were married, we knew that this was something special. The adventure and the life, extremely well-lived! were still ahead.
Georg, no one I know, no one I have met has thrown themselves into life the way you did. Nothing was ever half-way. Nothing was too big to tackle, and nothing was impossible. The Ontario education system found a gem when they hired you and how proudly you worked and planned and built. Those first General Vanier students, no matter who they were, grew and matured with your attitude, that nothing was impossible and that with effort and work, everything is possible. It was always a thrill to come to Hampton and tour your latest schools adventure and project and marvel at how lucky those that work with you were.
When we drove to the First Nation reservation and met artists and artisans, and discovered a whole new (old) world, it was a revelation to us. But it was more to you. It was a calling to get involved, to do SOMETHING, that is constructive and lasting and meaningful. And that devotion and those trips to the north define you too. We lived a more exciting life through your adventures. Thank you!
We will miss you and mourn for you, but we will be better and more whole for having been near you! You left your mark on so many people and projects, that is how immortality works!

Dear Elfi, I am still in shock. Georg was such a vibrant personality, involved in everything and always wanting to show his love by feeding everyone. You both had such a positive influence on a young Shane when you took him under your wing. I remember him telling me about his teacher and how important you both were to him. Over the years our friendship continued, you would visit the east coast and how thrilled he was when Georg spoke at Shane's retirement. A lot of years, a lot of good memories. Georg made the world a brighter place and I hope you know we all join you in mourning our dear friend Georg.

Several years ago Georg asked me if I would help out at the Farm Show in Milton. We were to serve beef on a bun, scalloped potatoes. Little did I know by the time it was all over we would serve 4500 beef on a bun , no idea how many bags of potatoes we went through. It was over two days. Although exhausted I would not have changed a thing. I would always say yes to my great friend Georg when asked. If he was asking it was for a good cause. I will miss him.

Dearest Elfie
We are at a lost for words to describe how much we feel for you at this time as you have lost your loving soulmate, a beautiful friend and giving husband.
There is a Poem that my friend told me about once and I think it is so fitting to honour the shining star that Georg was to all he touched. I won't quote the whole poem just a part. The Dash, the poem by Linda Ellis...
...He noted that first came the date of birth and spoke of
the following date with tears, but he said what
mattered most of all was the dash between those years.
For the dash represents all the time they spent alive
on earth and now only those who loved them know
what that little line is worth...
Georg had the most storied, spectacular dash. In his short life he travelled, cooked for famous people, worked all over the world and in all that time he remained a gentleman and a caring soul. He was a generous thoughtful man that always spoke his mind, We have so many loving memories of him with lots of laughter. He loved this community and is loved by so many. He may have left us way to soon, but he has certainly left us a legacy of how to live the Dash. His Dash was Priceless.
We are always here for you, please take advantage of us. We love you dearly and weep for your loss of this wonderful man with you.
Love you Always, Danielle and Rafal XOX

Georg has been part of our lives as far back as I can remember (40+ years). We were first neighbours when my brother and I were young, then became lifelong friends. Georg and Elfi were called aunt and uncle but are so much more. We would go over to visit all the time and have many delicious dinners and of course many amazing cakes. This time of the year we would have been blowing out and decorating eggs for Easter.
After we moved, we would always get together for birthdays and Georg would make our cakes. Somewhere along the line, Georg discovered my love for marzipan. For many years, Georg would make dome cakes with marzipan icing for my birthday. He even made my delicious wedding cake complete with marzipan icing. Everyone loved it of course!
Georg has helped me so much over the years, from working with him at Vanier school for a couple weeks to just offering support and guidance. Georg was always been someone that you could get sound advice from.
Our family will truly miss him and I hope he is with my brother, cooking up a storm.
We will always remember you and may you Rest In Peace.

We always chatted and reminiscent about Germany, food, nature, education, gardening and yes pastries. Visiting Georg and Elfi with my wife Lily was always a relaxing time with a stimulating conversation, highlighted with a culinary delight. He always had some sort of project on the go, weather it was teaching retirees or kids to cook or bake, organizing the Spring clean-up, working with Rotary to better the lives of many, helping out here and there in his community or sharing his knowledge with people around him. His enthusiasm for life was contagious. Over the years Georg became my mentor and I looked at him as my older brother.

Georg came to me in the early 2000's trying to round up local chefs to sit on a Professional Advisory Committee of culinary professionals and educators. From there we started a friendship and I began to see what kind of man he was as the years went on. I came to see over time that his passion for teaching young people to take an interest in the rewarding field of cooking was his whole life.
He knew everyone in the industry and was friends with them all. Everybody admired Georg for the same reasons I did.
He suggested I get into teaching at the college level to share what I had learned, and when I would hesitate, he pushed me and gave me the encouragement I needed to succeed. I will be forever grateful for his guidance.
To my dear Elfi, I am so sorry for your loss. I know Georg thought the world of you and I share your grief.

Of course Georg delighted in meeting friends for a meal. Here we are in September 2018 on Labour Day, celebrating at Fishbone, Musselmans Lake. Notice Georg has no hat. I'm pretty sure Elfi advised him to remove it at the table ...
He lived in his Tilley hat all summer. I think of him whenever I see a Tilley, including my own. It capped off all of his stories of his progress garden, the walks on his favourite pathways, in the canoe, on the sailboat, tending the bees, feeding the birds, picking grapes in the County in the fall harvest, volunteering. He may have taken it off to go swimming, but of that I cannot be sure.
I will miss your boyish enthusiasm and zest for the delights in life dear friend.
Hats off to you.

Thank you Chef Georg
I’ve known Georg for almost 30 years. We met through his championing of culinary education in the formation of the Kawartha Culinary Association. Over the years, Georg became a mentor and good friend. We taught together, cooked together and enjoyed some great meals and conversations together with you & Elfi.
Georg was a passionate teacher, chef and pastry chef. He was always willing to share his experience, expertise and time to help promote the hospitality industry. He volunteered his time at many community food events and judged countless high school, college and provincial culinary competitions. He was highly involved in the planning of the local OYAP program, Durham College’s culinary program, the creation of a Rotary bursary for hospitality students. Georg cared deeply about his students’ success. He supported them through their schooling and throughout their careers.
Georg, I admire your zest for life, you’ve been a great role model – setting the bar high and giving encouragement that we can all get there. Thank you Georg my friend, you will be missed but never forgotten.
