We were very pleased to work with a young woman who did an exceptional job and now so saddened by the loss of someone who should have continued to be a role model for other young women for many years to come. One of the times I was back east visiting, Alicia and I went for lunch. Just the two of us. Normally my far too rare visits are reserved for her Mom and I so this was a special treat. Alicia talked about life being really good, despite the chaos of having to figure out what the next chapter of her life would look like. She was about 17. At one point, something one of us said was really funny and we both laughed hysterically. Her laugh, smile, and look in her eyes was identical to her Moms. I was instantly transported back to grade 6 when Mel and I laughed so hard for so long we attracted the craziest of looks, which only made us laugh harder. Alicia and I got similar looks in Subway that day. I remember thinking "wow, of all the gifts your Mom gave u, the ability to laugh loud and hard in public has to be one of the best". I shared that thought with her as we were leaving. She politely nodded in agreement, still wearing her Mother's smile. To Mel, Sean, Paul and ur families, I know that laughter is a long way away right now. I know that when u hear her laugh in your dreams and then wake to this terrible nightmare, it will feel like you'll never laugh again. Be patient with time. One day you'll hear her laughter again in the voices of Hope and Logan - instead of pain, it will bring you pride and comfort. One day.

I am so saddened to hear of Alicia's passing. Although we weren't very close, we went to school together and she generously donated some of Logan's clothes to me when my son was born.
