My deepest condolences to the Barnes family and to Suzanne's friends. I met Suzanne in 2007 when she worked for Attawapiskat First Nation (AFN). I appreciated her enthusiasm for the work she was doing and I followed her interests in the mineral sector after she left AFN. We remained in touch partly because of our mutual interest in wildflowers. I knew Suzanne as a dedicated, determined, and committed person. I respected her a lot. My apologies for my late recognition.

Sincere Condolences to all of the Barnes family and to Suzanne's friends. It has taken me a while to post this. I feel somewhat lost for words, having been friends with Suzanne since around 1980-ish. We: trained and worked at the Bowmanville Fitness Centre - teaching swimming and lifeguarding; were both in the Environmental Studies Faculty at the University of Waterloo though in different programs; and, kept in touch ever since having work and non-work interests in common. I'm deeply saddened, as I know many are, at Suzanne's sudden and unexpected passing! I've posted some pictures that I hope reflect the best of Suzanne as I have known her over these many years. Darla

I was very sad to hear about Suzanne's passing last week, through a mutual contact. It was just two weeks ago that we last heard from her. I offer my condolences to her family.
I got to know Suzanne during her time in Attawapiskat, and enjoyed working with her there. We have kept in regular contact over the past 10 years, mostly work and professional things but also a fair bit of personal sharing. My wife Heidy and I met with Suzanne a few times in Bowmanville or in Toronto, which was always fun.
Suzanne will be missed.

Mr. and Mrs. Barnes and family; I am very shocked and saddened to hear about Suzanne's passing. I own a shop downtown, and reconnected with her thirteen years ago when I first opened. She was a familiar, friendly face here, always kind, always helpful, and, what I admired most, always had an "on the bright side" tidbit of wisdom to offer. I will miss her. My sincerest apologies for your loss.

With great sadness I learned of Suzanne s sudden passing and I extend my sincere condolences to her
family and friends. Suzanne stayed with me while she was attending Acadia and I had the pleasure of meeting her parents and grand parents (Yeo) . We have kept in touch over the years and I was quite in awe of her fabulous quilts and later her beautiful knitting projects.
Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.
Sincerely, Sheila

So sorry to hear of this sad news. Suzanne and I started working at Gros Morne at the same time and connected again when we were both living in PEI. I remember all the projects she had on the go and her involvement in Toastmasters. She encouraged me to get involved too and I’ve always been thankful for that. She was always quick with a smile and a cup of tea for friends. All the best to her family and friends during this really difficult time. Hold the memories close. Beth

Quiet and polite with a nervous sense of humour, Suzanne and I became friends in grade 9 when my family returned to Ontario from British Columbia. We attended Sunday School and other church groups together, all through high school, as well. So, we buddied up in Home Ec class all through high school. Many hours of sewing and chatting were spent over 35 years of friendship. The love of red wine became another common interest! That kind, awkward girl truly flourished into an intelligent & remarkable beautiful woman. Lol, my children were AMAZED that one of my friends actually worked as a ranger for Parks Canada, plus could design beautiful quilts, knit, AND cook anything!! One of Suzanne's favourite pictures of herself was with a motorcycle she rode out to the remotes of Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland. Suzanne had 20 times more knowledge and experience than most could ever dream of. When she took an interest in something, then she was whole hearted and mastered skills devouring all reputable resources to acquire her new information on the specifically selected category. She did not appreciate my teasing her for being brilliant and genius, but perhaps lacking a few street smarts and common sense---I got several evil glares over those comments! Suzanne's depth of understanding desired topics was greater than most. This included her niece and nephew....she was one of those bragging aunties that always piped up something admirable of these two youngsters in her life, especially when others tried ruling conversations about their wonderful children. Suzanne made it CLEAR--Jack and Samantha were, BY FAR, the greatest kids that ever walked the face of the Earth! Our memories made at CSS 50th were some of her happiest as those who bullied and tormented Suzanne, and Stephanie, in highschool did not show up at the reunion. She was efficient while helping with the refreshments on that occasion. Suzanne would always offer to help anyone, if she could. She also did important environmental work in Attiwapiskat ON, though I do feel this extensive situation contributed to a long-term negative impact on her. Suzanne had shared her story of meeting her husband while working with Parks Canada, and how they still had a decent relationship after divorcing. Suzanne was never good at accepting criticism and quite unforgiving if crossed, but those of us who loved her have forgiven her for that, too. Forever ambitious and adventurous, she had been working towards a new career in mining. Thankfully, Suzanne was a breast cancer survivor, too. She really endured a lot over her short lifetime...we all do, but not everyone accepts help when it is suggested. Mental health awareness is an important yet difficult conversation to have. Many of our mutual friends recognized Suzanne as frail back in 2011, but it is an extremely delicate topic and no one likes to hurt anyone else's feelings. Maybe, we should have just formed a united front and got her the help she needed back then. But, she was already in such denial and defensive, that none of us wanted her to push us away as she had already done so to her immediate family. Certainly, she did know that everyone had her best interests at heart...though, she was selective on who she allowed to stay within her close circle. As a close friend, this was painful to endure. I was truly blessed to see her friendly smile each morning as I dragged my butt onto that school bus in the early 80s. Suzanne always appreciated the kindness of others. She will be greatly missed as a caring member of the Bowmanville community. Godspeed, Suzanne.

Suzanne and I had many great conversations over coffee and a treat at one the Bowmanville coffee shops she would often frequent. I watched her reach her goal weight, fight a deadly disease and become and amazing knitter! She was always so supportive of my work, both professionally and personally. She shared many a kind word about Standard Poodles In Need even if she did think I was a bit crazy to be surrounded by so many dogs! She often talked far above my understanding of things in her business world, but I enjoyed the talks. May you rest in peace, Suzanne.
