Mr Santomero was a brilliant teacher, a keen-eyed and thoughtful, witty and kind inspiration for me, for so many of us. I have a lot of good memories of his classes at St Stephen's in the 90s...he was one of the greats.

I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Santomero's passing. I am a former eighth-grade student student of Mr. Santomero, and I will always remember him ... and his 'Board of Education'! He had such a great sense of humour.
He was one of God's creatures.

Rosa,
II was a great honour to know Rick for so many years. I met Rick at the beginning of my teaching career, teaching along with him at elementary school and then later on at St. Stephen’s High School. Rick was a great teacher, always positive and prepared with so much knowledge. The students and staff admired him...a true gentleman who was very personable, genuine and friendly. Rosa, you are so lucky to have been a colleague and close friend to Rick.
My sincere thoughts,
Fran

Mr Santomero was, without hesitation, my favourite teacher but more than that, he was a significant influence on who I have become and I know that was true for many of my classmates. Grade 8 was the perfect grade for him to teach, it is such an influential time and I think he knew that. He was a good teacher and we learned when he taught but that is only an aspect of what he offered. I think sometimes people identify a favourite teacher as an "easy" teacher but Mr Santomero was not that teacher. He was not "easy" and we all respected that. He was there to make an impact on us and our futures. He connected with us, got to know us and called us out when we needed it. I remember him pulling me aside once and telling me that he knew I was intelligent but that I was slacking and not putting in my best effort. He knew I could do better and he told me that I owed that to myself. With another teacher, I might have felt chastised but I simply felt cared about. I remember that moment so clearly. It influenced who I am today.
I want to also add that he was a friend to us as well, I want to be clear that he was not all serious. So I want to share another memory: My best friend, Andrew Roeloffzen, was always kind of a class clown and another teacher might have been frustrated with his antics sometimes- but as I said, Mr Santomero took time to know us and see all that was good in us, all of our potential. In preparation for graduation, Mr Santomero had told us to arrive at the church dressed for the ceremony. I believe he specifically told the males to wear "suits". Then on the day of our graduation, Andrew showed up in a track suit. Mr Santomero's face was unforgettable! He was horrified. Andrew told him that he understood that he was supposed to wear his track suit and you could see that Mr Santomero believed him and was stunned. It wasn't long before Andrew confessed that he had also brought a proper suit to wear but that he couldn't resist one last joke with his friend/teacher. Such a significant memory for me.
Years later and years ago, we had a little reunion of some of that class and Mr Santomero came. What teacher does that? Anyway, I just wanted to say that we told him these things when we saw him that day. I think he knew he made a significant impact on students but I know he knew that he did with us.
He was truly a special man and I am so sorry for the loss and grief all those in his life must be feeling. Rosa, I hope your memories will bring you comfort at this most difficult time.

Mr S was my grade 8 teacher at St Joe,s way back in the 70,s. I have such fond memories of his support and dedication in making sure we got our physical activity. He would let us play baseball on Friday afternoons and we all thought he was the best. RIP Mr. S, you were the best teacher.

Rosa, sending you my deepest condolences. Rick aka Mr.Santamero was one teacher I will never forget. He was so authentic and genuinely cared about his students. I actually looked forward to going to school to learn from him. There wasn’t a doubt in my mind (and this would have been grade 8) that he genuinely cared about me and I know he left this impact on many many students. I was glad to hear you were companions. Sending you love during this difficult time.

Mr.Santomero (Rick) was my coach for most sport teams from grade 4 onward and was my grade 8 teacher in Bowmanville. He was a great teacher and fierce coach who believed in you and pushed you to just believe in yourself. When I reflect back to our early school years, he is a teacher I think of with great respect as he helped form my mindset on never giving up and doing your very best. I'll always remember the moment he entered our classroom wiping tears from his eyes trying his very best to maintain his composure to announce with a trembling voice that Pope John Paul II was shot and he showed great strength as we remained silent in prayer for the Pope's recovery. A spiritual man with great devotion as a catholic teacher. May God embrace you Mr. Santomero (Rick) and welcome you to eternal life with all the light and love you so deserve while being reunited with all those you love. God Bless you and your family and from all the students who had you, we say thank you for your dedication, leadership and teaching the importance of self-respect. My condolences to Rick's family and friends. I taught with Rick at St.Stephen Secondary School. I have never forgotten his parting advice to the staff given on his last day before retirement. He reminded us to always put the kids first - no matter how busy things get or how political education gets - he reminded us that they are the reason we are there. He held the kids accountable for their achievement and their behaviour. He was a great role model for other teachers.

My deepest sympathies. Mr Santomero was one of my favourite teachers at St. Stephen's high school between 1989-1993. He was one of the tougher teachers but everyone had the utmost respect for him because of that. I minored with an area of concentration in history at Western, largely due to his influence. He will be remembered fondly from all his past students.
