Derek was always in high spirits and managed to bring out the best out of the people around him. He was truly a great guy. I've known Derek to be the music enthusiast that was very passionate about rock n roll. We would always chat about heavy metal bands and I even managed to jam with him a few times. I have to say I really can't believe you are gone. I was with you the night before you passed and I truly hope you felt me beside you, I can't thank you in words for the amazing son you gave me 22 years ago, he is so much like you you can never be forgotten because you live on in him .. You meant the world to him and so many others it was incredibly brilliant to see the amount of people that showed up in your honor over the past two days. You were such a beautiful soul and the Derek I knew and will always hold dear to my heart is the Derek that still loved everything about me no matter what. Such sad news! I knew Derek as I was the DJ at Hancs Bar in Bowmanville for many years. He was a regular and we spent many hours talking music. He also was in a band .. as I recall .. played bass. I can't remember the name of the band but he showed video on YouTube of them playing at the Molson Amphitheatre .. as an opening act. I used to joke with him some nights about whether he needed me to call him a cab so he could get home safe?? At the time he was living in the house that was at the other end of the parking lot, which was about a 200 metre walk from the front door of the bar to his own front door!!!! .One of my favourite memories was one night when he was literally the ONLY customer all night long!! His requests & chat made for what would normally have been a drag of a gig into a brilliant & fun evening. I think the last time I saw him was 2017 during Summerfest in Bowmanville. when he was passing the DJ booth on his bike and of course we got another music chat going! :{D
You will be missed but never forgotten!

Dear Tristan, Peggy, Don and Family:
My deepest sympathies and love to you all. You are deep in my thoughts.
Derek was an amazing person, a great community member, a fantastic musician and a very witty gent. Not only did he volunteer so much of his time at NPS, he was a great parent, friend and a creative and intuitive musician. He helped bring rock music to a small town elementary school playing bass with a number of talented students and two enthusiastic teachers who were simply lucky to play with him. I have many great memories of Derek over my first 10 years of teaching - a lot of conversations about music, life and a lot of laughter.
Derek's generosity, community mindedness and character are the types of things that help me have faith in humanity. He will be greatly missed.

I am truly saddened to hear of Derek's passing. From the first time he entered my music classroom I felt we had a special bond. He was so keen to learn about music and as our friendship grew over the years that I taught him, I could witness his growth and love of music . He became a hell of a bass player and apparently ( according to my nephew Ian Jack ) a welcome member to any group he joined in his post secondary years. I remember playing in high school Jazz Band with Derek. I played piano and he played bass. We always had a good time and we were able to make each other laugh. Jazz Band was fun already, but that time with Derek made it especially memorable.

Peggy, Don, Jason & Family,
I am not certain you will remember me Peggy, you worked with my Mom Glenda at the Nursing Home in Newcastle behind our house. I babysat for you and Don and looked after your boys quite a lot, one whole summer in fact when you lived in the apartment uptown and then in an apartment near the church! Derek was the sweetest, funniest little boy! He was so into the 6 Million Dollar Man back then and when he would do something he shouldn't he would say " I didn't do it, Steve Austin did it" Awwwww! I just heard of Derek's passing and wanted to tell you how very sorry I am to hear this. I had connected with Jason on Facebook sometime ago and shared my fond memories with him. Thinking of you and all who loved and adored him! Rest easy Derek, you will be remembered and missed......

Derek was a fantastic, fun-loving guy who always had a very hearty laugh!
