Al and I were shipmates as Sea Cadets with RCSCC VANGUARD. He was the coxswain, our chief, and a good friend. I was sorry we lost contact over the years. My heart-felt sympathy to Sarah and all your family.

Karen, Ben, Sarah, Jessica & Alannah,
We are all so very sorry. Al was a wonderful man, husband, father, friend, and special to many others. We met Al in 1989, as a neighbour, but quickly became friends, along with Karen. Our kids grew up together, had some great times. Al was kind hearted, funny, loving, loyal and a hard worker. Al was a great friend, always keeping in touch as we both moved. Still can't believe this, Angelo and I are going to miss him dearly. R.I.P. Al, until we meet again.

Is there anyway that a few words could possibly consolidate a 28 year father/son relationship? What about an essay? An encyclopedia? An anthology? Or a library? None of these would be sufficient because words are inherently insufficient to describe something like this.
From my earliest memories of my dad riding his bike down the street with me in a carriage alongside him, to his final days where I read to him by his hospital bedside, I never stopped loving my dad.
This experience was a tragedy that should have never happened. Through this tragedy, we can take away lessons - 1) Cherish the time you have. Life is short; 2) Cherish your loved ones. They won't be around forever; and 3) Get that damn cigarette out of your mouth!
My dad was physically young when he passed away; however, he lived more in 56 years than many who have lived to be 90 years. Age is a number. Time is meaningless unless you do something with it.

Uncle Al,
My dad always spoke so highly of you - you were a great friend to him and an even better husband to my auntie chick. I watched the way you treated her.. and it always inspired me. You were so kind and thoughtful to our whole family. I will think of you every time someone cuts a turkey. I will miss you every time I see my auntie and cousins. It doesn’t feel real. I wish I could bring you back - but I’m so glad your pain is over. Rest In Peace <3

Alan Hedley (sixth child of William and Lorraine Hedley)
Last Friday, I lost my youngest brother and dearest friend. More importantly his family lost a father. He is survived by his best friend spouse/partner Karen and wonderful children now young adults Sarah, Ben, Alanna, Jessica and her life partner Greg. While Alan fought bravely for over a year to fend off the cancer through his difficult treatments he continued to work and enjoy life with his family and friends. His positive attitude was impressive, and I am sure helped his family manage their own concerns and fears. His entire family, friends and work colleagues helped with the trips to treatments and spending precious time just “chilling” with him. Their love for each other was contagious.
During the last weeks while hospitalized, I learned more from my brother about the importance of his family in his life. His wishes for their success and happiness in life. I spent time with his brother (George) and sister (Lisa)-in-law learning about how Alan had contributed to their life. I also met other relatives, neighbours and work colleagues from Creighton and learned that he was more than a neighbour or work colleague, he was a lifelong friend. He always accepted everyone as they were, no pretense, no judgement. This reminded me so much of his father William (Bill) Hedley. He indeed was more like his father than I had ever realized.
One of my last conversations with Alan was about our relationship with Mom and Dad. We spoke about how he found his way from working on Toronto Ferries to Ocean Tugs in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Being a Sea Cadet learning to lead as a Chief Petty Officer of R.C.S.C.C. Vanguard and then onto the Construction, Mining, Quarrying, Road equipment industry; from the days with Dad at Sheridan Equipment to his wonderful friends at Creighton; how his expertise was learned and shared freely with anyone who asked him. He had no regrets, it was just the way that he chose to make a living and provide for his family. He gave all his love to his family and friends freely.
Alan has two brothers (John and me) and three sisters (Christine Hurst, Susan McCabe, Nancy Borland). They in-turn have life partners (Sue, Pat, Ron, John and Brent) children and grandchildren. Forty-six of us at last count. We are all in some state of shock-sadness-peace knowing that he is now resting peacefully. We will in our own ways celebrate his life and gift of friendship and love. I will do my best to be a father and friend just like he was in his life.
Robert Hedley (Proud brother and friend forever)
