I just heard of Rogers passing. I had not seen Roger for years but he was someone that I was constantly asking about as he was a unique gregarious character that truly made a life long impression on me. Never bothered always laughing and happy. He was a great guy. I am sorry for your loss but there is no doubt he went on his terms.

What does one say about the passing of Mort…Roger had a huge positive influence in my life and the lives of many others, as well. I worked for Roger at Jamieson Tire “back in the day” along side Rod and Jeff. Others came and went, too. I started working there on a High School co-op program and Roger actually paid me for the time I worked there on my co-op hours. He didn’t have to do that, he just did. That’s the kind of guy he was. I laugh when I think back…Roger would catch us goofing off, get mad at us and say “Get to work. Do you guys even know what work is? Look up ‘work’ in the dictionary”.
I dated Roger’s daughter back in the day and was lucky to have spent time with all of the family. Roger always made me feel welcome and took me along to the tractor pulls. At first, my friends were scared of the large, imposing man but as they got to know him they came to love the gentle giant just as I did. All of my friends thought Roger was cool, every single one.
One thing that I will always remember was Roger’s love of his dogs. There was Bernie, and Buster. Bernie was the first dog and he was a wanderer. I vividly recall driving home from their place one night and seeing Bernie, dead on the side of the road. I can still remember the spot like it was yesterday. I was devastated, I loved Bernie too…but I knew that Roger and the family were going to take it hard. I had to drive back and tell them. To this day, one of the worst things I have ever had to do. Then came his next dog Buster, what a character! Who can forget seeing Roger in the old red Jamieson Tire Service truck and Buster riding alongside. The two were inseparable.
I moved on and then Roger gave me a job after I finished college, as I couldn’t find one. He didn’t have to do that, he did it out of kindness. Roger wasn’t perfect, but I don’t know anybody that is. But, God, how I looked up to that man. Over the years, I spoke to Roger many times about the folks that used to work for him. He was so very proud that many of his former employees went on to productive, successful lives and he felt strongly that his influence helped them along. I agree.
I think back fondly to the times with Roger, the tractor pulls and Jamieson Tire. Who can forget stopping in to Jamieson Tire on a Friday night to finish up the work week, to have some laughs and a whiskey (or two). Back in the day, Jamieson Tire wasn’t just a shop in Bowmanville, it was an integral part of the community. It was like Floyd’s Barber Shop on the Andy Griffith Show; somewhere you stopped to catch up, tell stories and find out how others in the community were doing. And who can forget tractor pulls at the old Thistle Valley Trailer Park with Roger, good times!
And, the stories. Oh my goodness, Roger was a true raconteur in every sense of the word. Roger had his preferred topics, but he was comfortable chatting about almost any topic and although he often had strong opinions, he respected the opinions of others.
Ironically, one of the best conversations you could ever witness, or be part of, was with Roger and Carson Elliott, a past owner of this very funeral home. Those two would tell stories and laugh, it was really something to see and always brought a smile to everybody in the room.
Roger could build anything, fix anything and he knew more about tractors and old motorcycles than anyone I ever knew. Roger was also a war historian and had extensive knowledge of Durham Region history, including “Camp X” and “Camp 30”. Roger once leased a shop on the old “Camp 30” property and for a time, was caretaker of that property. One of my favourite memories of Roger was the day he took me exploring through the buildings, before they were destroyed. He knew everything about every building and its war-time purpose.
After Roger closed the shop out by Camp 30, I didn’t see him very much anymore and that’s nobody’s fault, that’s just life. And sadly in death, we tend to see those things we should have done in life much more clearly.
I’ll never forget Roger and I hope Bowmanville doesn’t either, because he made it a better place.
RIP, Mort.

Mark and I were so very sad to hear the news. Roger was a great man! Such a kind heart, great laugh and sense of humour, and so easy to talk to. He will be greatly missed by so many! My mom (Nancy Thompson) worked up the street with him at Pineridge Automotive for many years and always had such nice things to say about him as well. So does my Dad (Ron Thompson). Sending you and all of your family our love and support, Joanne. The world has lost one of the great ones!

After our father Norm Luxton passed away last year, almost a year to the day, Roger and I had several great conversations before and after the funeral. During my father's eulogy i spoke of all the decades of good times that generation and crew had, and I recalled the story of a night Roger walked into my father's house...he looked at me, cracked the lid off of a 40 pounder, tosses the lid to me and says, 'Shane put this into the garbage would you, we wont be needing this anymore...' many hours later I watched him amble up Church Street until he was out of site and i knew he was close to Jamieson's before i went into the house to peel my father from the kitchen chair. Roger recalled that night and laughed. I had pictures of that night of them sitting there shaking hands and laughing. He called after the funeral and we laughed about many stories of them and the last thing Roger said to me was, 'I was always told that when you die you are a lucky man if you can count your true friends on one hand, Shane, the Bite was one of those friends.' Such a thoughtful and poetic comment to my father's passing from Roger. He was a gentle giant and a great friend to my father and our family. All the best to the family....
